A Seiko mod is a custom watch built around a Seiko-family movement, with a separately chosen case, dial, hands, bezel and bracelet. “Mod” describes the build: the finished watch is not made or sold by Seiko.

Ours are built around movements from TMI, the movement maker of the Seiko group (NH34, NH35, NH38, VK63), or the Miyota 8285, with a sapphire crystal and a 904L steel case. Each watch is assembled by hand after you order and checked for function, alignment and finish before dispatch, with a 12-month ModTime warranty. Start with what the watch should do: a date (NH35), a clean dial or open heart without a date (NH38), a second time zone (NH34 GMT), a stopwatch (VK63 chronograph) or the weekday and date (Miyota 8285). Then pick the style and size: Datejust, Oyster and Day-Date come in 36, 39 or 41 mm, Royal Oak and Aquanaut in 41 mm, GMT and Daytona in 40 mm and Santos in 38 mm.

Yes, that is what they are built for. Automatic builds wind themselves as you wear them, VK63 chronographs run on quartz, the sapphire crystal resists scratches and the 904L steel case resists corrosion. For water, 3 ATM handles rain and splashes and 5 ATM gives more margin; neither is meant for swimming or showering.

Pull the crown out gently and turn it to set the time. On NH35, NH34 and NH38 builds the seconds hand stops while the crown is out, so you can set the time to the second. If an automatic has stopped after a few days off the wrist, wind it with the crown and set the time again, and never change settings underwater or while the watch is wet.

Metal bracelets arrive prepared for adjustment, with a complimentary adjustment kit. Remove a little at a time and test the fit before taking out more links. If you have never sized a bracelet, a local watchmaker is the safest option. More care questions.

It depends on what the watch does: NH35 automatic with date, NH38 automatic without date (also in our open-heart builds), NH34 automatic GMT for a second time zone, VK63 meca-quartz chronograph, and Miyota 8285 automatic with day and date.
