Water Resistance
Water Resistance
Water resistance is one of the most important trust details in a custom watch because it touches real life: rain, hand washing, travel, humidity, summer wear and the small moments when a watch stops being a display piece and becomes part of a routine.
The right language is protection, not invincibility. A water-resistant watch still depends on rating, case condition, crown position, gasket condition, strap choice and how the watch is used over time. ModTime explains it clearly because a premium build should make the customer more confident, not more confused.
Water resistance starts with the build
Water resistance is not a cosmetic detail added after the watch is finished. It belongs to the build path: case, crown, crystal, caseback, gaskets and final review all matter. When your selected configuration includes a stated water-resistance level or upgrade, that detail is treated before dispatch as part of the finished watch.
For the broader process, see How We Build. For the final inspection path, see Quality Check.
3 ATM: everyday protection for normal use
3 ATM is the baseline water-resistance language for everyday exposure. It is designed for the kind of contact a daily watch may meet in normal life: light splashes, rain and careful wear around water.
It should not be treated as a swimming, showering or diving promise. The point is honest daily protection, not exaggerated performance language. If your main concern is casual daily wear and you are careful around water, 3 ATM keeps the specification simple and transparent.
5 ATM upgrade: more headroom, still honest boundaries
For customers who want a stronger water-resistance configuration where offered, the 5 ATM upgrade gives more headroom than 3 ATM and adds reassurance for everyday ownership. It is the right choice for buyers who want a more confidence-focused build and prefer to reduce anxiety around normal water exposure.
It is still not a dive-watch claim. Ratings are tied to test conditions and the condition of the watch. Real use introduces movement, temperature changes, crown handling, impact, soap, salt, straps and wear over time.
Pressure checks and real-world use
A pressure check helps verify the water-resistance path for the selected configuration, but no test makes water resistance permanent. Gaskets age. Crowns and case parts can be affected by impact or wear. Any watch that is exposed to water should be treated with care and checked when its condition changes.
The simplest rule is also the most useful: keep the crown fully closed, avoid operating the crown or pushers when wet, avoid hot water and steam, dry the watch after exposure and remember that leather straps and water do not belong together. For the material side of the story, see Materials.
Which option should you choose?
Choose 3 ATM if you want a clean daily custom watch and your water exposure is limited to careful everyday use.
Choose 5 ATM where offered if you want the stronger upgrade and a more reassurance-led build. It is especially relevant if the watch will be worn often, travel often or sit in a rotation where daily practicality matters.
If your use case is regular swimming, diving or repeated heavy water exposure, choose a watch and specification built for that purpose rather than assuming every custom build is meant for it.
