Sapphire Crystal in ModTime Watches: Benefits and Care
The crystal is the transparent cover over the dial. ModTime uses sapphire crystal in its current offered watches because resistance to surface scratches matters when you wear a watch regularly. That benefit is specific: sapphire is very hard, but a watch crystal still needs sensible care.
What is a sapphire watch crystal?
Optical sapphire is a crystalline material used for transparent windows as well as watch crystals. Its hardness is 9 on the Mohs scale, below diamond at 10. The scale describes resistance to scratching; it is not a score for resistance to every kind of damage.
For a watch buyer, the practical benefit is keeping a clear view of the dial during normal use. The crystal covers the hands, markers and date display, so a marked surface can affect the experience of a dial you carefully chose. Sapphire's scratch resistance helps preserve that view.
Why it matters on different ModTime watches
A GMT buyer reads the extra 24-hour hand against the dial or bezel. A chronograph buyer follows the timing hands and subdials. An open-heart buyer wants a view of the moving mechanism. In each case, the crystal serves the same basic purpose: protecting the dial while allowing you to read or inspect it.
The material specification does not replace the rest of the comparison. Dial contrast, hand shape, case dimensions and your chosen configuration still matter. If legibility is your priority, inspect the photographs of the exact colour version rather than assuming every dial in a family reads identically.
Sapphire, mineral glass and acrylic
Sapphire is valued for high scratch resistance. Mineral glass and acrylic are different crystal materials, with different trade-offs in cost, surface marking and impact behaviour. No single material name tells you everything about the thickness, shape, mounting or treatment of a finished crystal.
Our offered specification is sapphire. We do not use that word as a claim that the whole watch is indestructible. A hard surface can still chip or crack under an impact, and a sufficiently hard abrasive can damage it.
What does “anti-scratch” mean?
For our sapphire crystal, it means highly resistant to scratching. It does not mean scratch-proof, unbreakable or immune to accidental damage. Avoid hard impacts and abrasive contact even when a crystal is sapphire.
Is sapphire automatically anti-reflective?
No. An anti-reflective coating is a separate specification. A sapphire crystal can be supplied with or without a coating. Unless a particular ModTime offer expressly identifies one, the word sapphire alone should not be read as an AR-coating promise. Reflections in a product photograph are also not proof of a coating specification.
Does sapphire determine water resistance?
No. Water resistance belongs to the assembled watch and its selected configuration. The crystal material alone does not establish it. Use the product options and water-resistance guidance when deciding how to use the watch.
Choose the function behind the crystal
- GMT Joker with NH34: a separate 24-hour hand for following another time zone.
- Panda chronograph with VK63: a stopwatch function for elapsed time.
- Chocolate Open Heart with NH38: a view of automatic mechanics through the dial opening.
These are different reasons to choose a watch with sapphire. Read the movement comparison to match the function to your routine, and our 904L case guide to understand the material around the crystal.
Frequently asked questions
Will sapphire never show a mark?
No. Sapphire is highly scratch-resistant, not immune to damage. A surface mark also needs inspection before assuming the crystal itself is scratched.
Does sapphire mean a watch is a luxury factory model?
No. It describes a component. ModTime watches are independent custom builds; the crystal does not imply an outside brand's affiliation.
How do I compare two sapphire watches?
Compare their actual movement, dial readability, shape, size and selected options. A shared crystal material does not make the watches identical.
Optical-material references
Knight Optical: sapphire optics describes hardness and coated or uncoated options. Meller Optics: sapphire windows provides another optical-material reference. These explain the material; they do not certify a ModTime product.
Care for the Watch You Chose
Keep the dial's cover in good condition
Sapphire is the crystal material listed on the current ModTime watch offers. It helps resist surface scratches so you can enjoy the dial you chose. Keep the watch protected from hard impacts and abrasive contact during everyday handling. The material around the dial and the movement behind it are separate parts of the specification.
Read the exact movement guidance
An automatic, GMT, day-date or chronograph build has its own documented function. Use instructions for the movement named on your product when setting or operating the watch. Start with the movement comparison if you need to identify the category, then use the linked guidance for that exact movement. This keeps operating advice connected to your actual build.
Keep water guidance tied to your configuration
Check the water-resistance option selected on your product and use the existing water-resistance guide when comparing intended use. The sapphire crystal and a maritime-looking design do not establish the assembled watch's water specification. If you need advice about a particular activity, contact ModTime with the exact watch and selected configuration.
Use the support route for a specific concern
If you want help assessing a surface mark or another issue, contact ModTime and identify the watch and the part you want checked. That lets the conversation relate to your build rather than to a general material name. Keep the product's specifications and chosen options available when asking for support. The warranty and support page explains the current route for a ModTime watch.

Questions before you choose
Does sapphire establish an anti-reflective coating?
A coating is a separate specification. Check the exact product offer if that feature matters to your choice.
How long do assembly and delivery take?
For delivery to the USA, assembly takes 4–6 working days, followed by 7–12 business days in transport.
What warranty is included with a ModTime watch?
Your watch comes with a 12-month ModTime warranty.
