904L Stainless Steel Watch Cases | ModTime

A watch case is the part you live with every day: against the wrist, under a sleeve and exposed to fingerprints and perspiration. ModTime uses 904L stainless steel for the watch cases in its current offered catalogue. Here is what that choice means when you compare a custom watch.

What is 904L stainless steel?

904L is an austenitic stainless-steel grade. Its nickel and molybdenum content helps it resist corrosion in demanding environments. The useful point for a watch buyer is corrosion resistance, rather than a promise that the surface cannot be scratched. Outokumpu classifies 904L in its Ultra range of highly corrosion-resistant steels.

The grade describes the metal, not the watch's appearance. A silver-tone, gold-tone or rose-gold-tone finish is a separate feature. A rose-gold-tone ModTime case is not a case made from solid rose gold. Equally, a steel designation alone does not explain the quality of the brushing, polishing or assembled watch.

Why use it in a watch case?

For ModTime, the case material supports a practical goal: a custom watch you can choose for its dial, shape and function while also understanding what surrounds the movement. The case gives the watch its structure; the dial and finish give an individual build its character. Knowing both is more useful than judging quality from the colour alone.

When comparing two builds, look at case dimensions, the outline and the selected configuration as well as the steel grade. A square Santos-style case, a round GMT case and an integrated-bracelet case can feel different on the wrist even when each uses 904L. Choose the form you want to wear; use the material specification as one part of that decision.

904L and 316L: what can we honestly say?

904L offers higher corrosion resistance than common 316L in some demanding conditions. That does not make 316L unsuitable for watches, or 904L the best material for every possible use. Other stainless-steel grades offer different combinations of corrosion resistance, hardness, cost and machinability. The correct comparison depends on the application.

For a buyer, the useful question is: what is the actual case specification of this offer? Our material statement refers to the ModTime case. It does not automatically assign the same grade to every bracelet link, clasp, spring bar or other component. Check the product's own specification for those separate parts.

Does 904L make a watch scratch-proof or waterproof?

No. Everyday contact can mark a polished or brushed steel surface. Water resistance is a separate property of the completed watch, its seals and the selected build. A case's steel grade is not permission to expose a watch to water beyond its stated guidance. Read the water-resistance guide for that separate decision.

How to choose a ModTime build with 904L

  1. Start with the function: a date display, a second time zone, a stopwatch or a no-date automatic layout.
  2. Compare the case shape, listed size and the dial of the exact version.
  3. Read the crystal specification separately. Our sapphire crystal guide explains scratch resistance and its limits.
  4. Review the options and current availability on the product page before ordering.

Examples in the current catalogue include the GMT Joker NH34 build and Chocolate Open Heart NH38 build. They use the same stated case material for different purposes: a second-time-zone display in one, visible automatic mechanics in the other.

Frequently asked questions

Is every visible metal part 904L?

Our catalogue statement is about the watch case. It is not a blanket specification for bracelets, clasps or small fittings.

Does the material name certify an individual watch?

It states the offered material. It is not an individual laboratory certificate or an independent test report.
